The embattled Muhammed refused to be handcuffed by a team of prison warders who brought him to court and was seen, aiming at snatching one of the guns of the warders who brought him to court.
After the judgment was delivered against him, Muhammed became hysterical and refused to be handcuffed and taken away. He warned the prison warders to stay away from him, threatening to kill anyone who dared to come near.
But Muhammed’s bravado did not last long as the team of warders, helped by other security agents, launched out on and subdued him, making all who had run for their dear life to return and behold the face of the condemned man. Justice Umah, who delivered judgment on the matter said prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that the gunshots fired by the accused person at close range killed the deceased. He said the action was an offence punishable under Section 319, Cap 1 of the Criminal Code applicable to the state, under which the offence was committed.
He said further that the accused deserved no sympathy and ordered that he should be hanged by the neck until he died, as it would serve as a deterrent to those who might want to embark on such senseless venture in future. Muhammed had been tried in orderly room trial under the leadership of Assistant Commissioner of Police, Joseph Micloth and dismissed from police service, which made it possible for him to be tried in a High Court after a Chief Magistrate, Maureen Ahukanna, said her court had no jurisdiction to entertain the case.
In the early hours of July 19, 2011, Corporal Muhammed of the Nigerian Police Force, Police Headquarters, Bende Road, Umuahia, attached to Government House, Umuahia, shot and killed his fellow convoy colleague, Corporal Clement Amaechi.
The two policemen were attached to the convoy of the Abia State Governor, Chief Theodore Orji. Corporal Amaechi was said to be watching a late night movie in his room, which the two of them shared as living quarters when the incident happened. The killer cop went berserk shooting sporadically after killing Amaechi and was later disarmed by one of the security men at the Government House, who shot him, wounding him in the process, when he wanted to change the magazine of his gun, which had finished. Muhammed was later taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, where he was given medical attention before being tried at orderly room and dismissed from service.
