It is reported the Blues could move for the 32-year-old if they ultimately fail with their repeated attempts to buy Wayne Rooney from Manchester United.
Eto’o still has huge amounts of quality and he would prove to be a useful player should he move to Stamford Bridge: the Cameroon international has already bagged two goals in four appearances this season.
However, there are three reasons why Chelsea should avoid going for the Anzhi attacker...
High Wages
Firstly, there is a reason why Anzhi are looking to sell Eto’o: the player’s wages. The 32-year-old has been earning crazy money during his time in the Russian Premier League -Eto’o earns around £17 million a year after tax. One wonders with the high wages he is likely to earn at Stamford Bridge, should he make the move, is he worth the money?
Although he has scored a decent two goals in four games this season, only 45 per cent of his shots were on target and he also created one chance per game. At Chelsea, they need a striker who can not only finish, but a forward who can also create. Perhaps this explains why the club have also been interested in Rooney.
This is because Chelsea's attacking trio of Oscar, Eden Hazard and Juan Mata often like to play beyond the striker, meaning the centre-forward has the responsibility of exposing space and threading passes to the young, yet supremely talented attacking trio.
Age
At 32 years old, you have to question how many seasons Eto'o can offer Chelsea. Furthermore, the signing of the striker would go against Chelsea's recent transfer policy, as the club have looked to sell their older stars and replace them with young talents who are yet to reach their full potential, such as Mata and Hazard.
Very few strikers have maintained their ability to perform week-in-week-out for title contenders at Eto'o's age. Although he is a fantastic striker, it is difficult to see him as the best striker Jose Mourinho could pursue this summer.
Although Eto’o still has an eye for goal, the stats suggest his performances are not consistent. In terms of Squawka Awards, he has been voted the Worst Attacking player and the Worst Man in the team already this season.
Romelu Lukaku
Finally, Chelsea already have a brilliantly talented striker at the club in the form of Romelu Lukaku.
His progress on loan at West Brom has been sensational, and the fact he scored an impressive 17 goals in 35 appearances suggested he is ready to take on the challenge at Chelsea.
His shot accuracy (66 per cent) and conversion rate of 21.5 per cent is particularly imposing, plus he created just under 40 chances for the Baggies last campaign.
At just 19 he is showing immense potential and talent and could become a world-class striker. With Fernando Torres and Demba Ba faltering when leading the line, Lukaku could be the perfect striker for the Euorpa League winners.
