It has weakened an additional 20 percent so far in 2023,” the report reads.

“Other currencies with significant losses last year include those of Sudan (23.6 percent), Malawi (20.7 percent),11 The Gambia (14.6 percent), and Nigeria (10.2 percent). Furthermore, rising food and energy prices continued to fuel headline inflation.”

In the report, the World Bank projected that sub-Saharan Africa’s economy would grow 3.1 percent this year, down from 3.6 percent in 2022.

The bank said the growth deceleration in 2023 is a reflection of several short-term headwinds, including the slowdown in the global economy (particularly in the United States, the euro area, and China), the lingering effects of the coronavirus pandemic and elevated inflation.

According to the bank, other factors responsible for the decline include the war in Ukraine, rising financial risks owing to high public debts reaching unsustainable levels, and continued supply disruptions.

The Washington-based organisation said inflation in sub-Saharan Africa is set to remain high at 7.5 percent for 2023.

The bank also said debt distress risks remain high with 22 countries in the region at high risk of external debt distress or in debt distress as of December 2022.

In the face of dampened growth prospects and rising debt levels, the World Bank advised African governments to sharpen their focus on macroeconomic stability, domestic revenue mobilisation, debt reduction, and productive investments.

“Resource-rich countries can take advantage of the rising demand for minerals and metals linked to the global transition to a low carbon economy (such as cobalt, copper and lithium) to increase fiscal resources, create new regional value chains that produce jobs, and accelerate energy access on the continent,” the report adds.

“However, turning a “resource curse” into a “resource opportunity” will require good sectoral governance, appropriate taxation to capture a greater share of resource rents, and regional cooperation and investments.”
Babanaturehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00741424637485011096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6055881239387546605.post-21063898339614358812023-04-07T20:07:00.005-07:002023-04-07T20:07:36.876-07:00Bandits have reportedly abducted 60 persons in Zamfara and Katsina states.
The abductees who are said to be mostly children are from Kucheri, Wanzamai, and Danwuro communities in Tsafe LGA of Zamfara state, and Yankara town in Faskari LGA of Katsina state.

Faskari LGA in Katsina and Tsafe LGA in Zamfara are border towns.

The abductions were said to have taken place on Friday morning when the bandits were moving from Sububu forest in Zamfara to a forest in Birnin Gwari LGA of Kaduna state.

Ahmad Kucheri, a resident of Tsafe LGA in Zamfara state, said the bandits have suffered casualties from the military and were fleeing from the state, adding that the bandits began abducting people they sighted on their way out of the state.

He said the majority of the victims were abducted from their farms, while some were children who went to fetch firewood in the bush.

“The bandits were moving from Sububu Forest to Birnin-Gwari side. look something like a caecilian: a legless creature that’s actually
neither worm nor snake but a soil-dwelling amphibian found in tropics
across the globe.

Content to spend most of their time beneath the
forest floor, caecilians are elusive and poorly understood. Which is why
Carlos Jared, a biologist at the Butantan Institute in São Paulo,
Brazil, has spent a good part of the last three decades hot on their
trail.

Bagging a caecilian specimen, he said, often takes hours of
laborious digging, carefully executed so a poorly aimed shovel doesn’t
cleave the creature in two. Once a specimen is spotted, “you have to
jump on it,” Jared said, and then wrestle the wriggly amphibian — which,
depending on the species, can range in length from a couple inches to 5
feet — into a sack. Many caecilians have squirmed out of Jared’s grasp
at the last moment, gleefully greased by a gelatinous goo that oozes out
of their skin.

But Jared said the animals’ fascinating and
sometimes baffling biology makes the incessant chasing more than worth
it. His team’s latest discovery, published Friday in iScience, shows
caecilians’ mouths might be rimmed by venom-tipped teeth, not unlike
those found in some snakes.

The discovery would mark the first
time venom glands have been found in the mouth of an amphibian — one
whose evolutionary history predates the appearance of snakes by more
than 100 million years. That could make little-known caecilians among
the oldest venomous biters on Earth.

Like most other amphibians,
caecilians have long been thought to produce only poisons, which, unlike
venoms, aren’t actively injected into other creatures. So Pedro Luiz
Mailho-Fontana, a postdoctoral scholar working with Jared, was baffled
when he discovered a series of fluid-filled ducts lining the teeth of a
ringed caecilian specimen in the lab. “This is a very different thing
here,” he recalled thinking.

After searching the mouths of newly
hatched caecilians, Mailho-Fontana determined that the tooth-cradling
glands grow out of the same tissue that gives rise to teeth.

Dental
tissue also happens to be the point of origin for venom glands in
snakes, which could help explain the purpose of the newfound ducts,
Jared said. Without legs or arms to parry with predators or prey,
animals like snakes and caecilians must rely heavily on their heads.

Caecilians,
like some snakes, are equipped with impressive teeth, and can get
pretty “bitey,” said Emma Sherratt, an evolutionary biologist at the
University of Adelaide who wasn’t involved in the study.

If
caecilians also pack a venomous bite, they may have independently
stumbled upon a strategy that’s worked out well for many snakes. That
would be “really interesting and remarkable,” said Shab Mohammadi, an
evolutionary biologist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln who wasn’t
involved in the study. Perhaps limblessness is an important impetus for
the evolution of tooth-borne toxins.

But Mohammadi also noted that
it’s still unclear how noxious the glands’ contents are or how toxic
they are to the insects and worms that caecilians nosh on. Jared and his
team have yet to do an in-depth chemical analysis of the caecilian’s
glandular goop, although early tests show it’s full of a protein that’s
also present in venoms from insects and snakes. Caecilians’ mouths seem
to teem with slime at mealtimes, but the secretions have proved to be
stubbornly viscous and tough to extract, Mailho-Fontana said.

The
researchers are also unsure how widespread venom glands are among
caecilian species, which currently number more than 200 (with many more
likely unknown). If the ducts are found in ancient lineages, it could
indicate that caecilians were among the first land-living vertebrates to
lace their bites with venom.

Jared’s team is planning to snag a few more specimens, but even once they manage to get them, it won’t be easy.

A
few years ago, during a visit to a collaborator’s lab in London, Marta
Maria Antoniazzi, a co-author of the study also of the Butantan
Institute, picked up a tiny caecilian that promptly sank its teeth into
her hand.

“It hurt a lot,” she said.

And the wound took a surprisingly long time to close up. Now, Antoniazzi wonders if she was an unwitting victim of venom.

“At the time, we couldn’t have even imagined,” she said.

This article originally appeared in The New York Times.
Babanaturehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00741424637485011096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6055881239387546605.post-26567970499073032652020-06-21T03:13:00.000-07:002020-06-21T03:13:32.962-07:00Police Inspector commits suicide after killing ex-lover, husband for turning down marriage proposal
A police inspector, Kenneth Enamika attached to 29 PMF, Awka in Anambra State has allegedly killed his ex lover, Oluchi Aputanze from Ozoara, Mgbidi in Oru West council area of Imo State for allegedly deceiving him and marrying someone else, Cajethan Aputanze after his financial commitment to her.

According to the State police Public Relation Officer, Orlando Ikeokwu, the incident which occurred on March,22 has thrown the whole community into a mourning mood.

The police inspector, according to the police image maker, was said to have left a suicide note and an AK 47 riffle on the scene, indicating that he shot and killed his ex lover Oluchi and subsequently killed his rival, Oluchi’s husband (Cajethan) before taking his own life.

According to a source from the community, Eze Ozoara who reported the incident to the police, the suicide note was also said to have contained how the late inspector had gave Oluchi the sum of N150, 000 on trust that she would marry him, only for him to discover later that she had already married Cajethan.

When the inspector discovered the betrayal, he was said to have confronted Oluchi to refund his money, but Oluchi’s husband, according to the police report, threatened the late police officer with a charm which eventually made him to take the law in his own hands by killing the couple and himself.

Meanwhile Ikeokwu said the corpses have been deposited in the morgue while investigation has begun.
Babanaturehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00741424637485011096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6055881239387546605.post-75403568076599768752020-06-20T17:34:00.001-07:002020-06-20T17:36:11.535-07:00Guru Maharaj Ji warns Buhari over sacking of Service Chiefs
The Founder of the One Love Family, Sat Guru Maharaj Ji, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari not to sack his current service chiefs, warning that insecurity in the country should not be politicised.

Maharaj Ji stated this in a phone conversation with Saturday Sun, adding that Buhari should seek spiritual help and by creating a security task force to be headed by his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo.

According to him, Buhari should not make the mistake of handing the security of the country in the hands of wolfs in sheep’s clothing.

‘Buhari needs the country’s support more than before. An aspiring model was struck and killed by a train in Navasota, Texas on Friday while posing for a photoshoot on the tracks that she hoped would help launch her career.

Authorities report that Fredzania "Zanie" Thompson, 19, and her photographer were standing between two sets of tracks at a railway crossing taking photos at around noon. According to The Eagle, one set of the tracks belonged to BNSF and the other to Union Pacific, and the teenager was standing on the former, facing towards an oncoming BNSF train. She then tried to cross the tracks in order to avoid it, but was struck by a Union Pacific train coming from the opposite direction on the other set of tracks.

Buzzfeed reports that Thompson was immediately rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Witnesses state that despite both trains blowing their horns, she did not see the oncoming train behind her.

“This horrific incident is the reason they don’t want individuals and kids playing on rail tracks, because trains come intermittently and you don’t know when they come," Navasota Director of Public Safety Shawn Myatt told Buzzfeed.
Nicki Minaj has been delivering searing dis tracks and putting out huge collaborations at a breakneck pace lately, and it appears that she has absolutely no intention of stopping on that front.

After flipping to the next chapter in the Minaj vs. Remy Ma saga and throwing another verbal punch with "No Frauds," the rapper hinted that she has more to share — and that the drop of new material is imminent.

https://twitter.com/NICKIMINAJ/status/840621896353886208
https://twitter.com/NICKIMINAJ/status/840624634093543424

Just this week, Minaj put out "No Frauds," which features Drake and Lil Wayne, "Changed It," which also features bars from Weezy, and "Regret In Your Tears," her first song to address her breakup with Meek Mill.

Before that came collabs with Gucci Mane ("Make Love," the song that poured gasoline on the Nicki/Remy fire), "Bom Bidi Bom," her Fifty Shades Darker duet with Nick Jonas, and Jason Derulo ("Swalla," which also features Ty Dolla $ign). In short: Minaj has kept real, real busy in 2017, and her work shows for it.

Whether it's a video, a track, or a whole damn album, it's anyone's guess, but hopefully Minaj's tease will manifest into something new before the weekend's up.

Estibaliz Carranza, 38, will be transferred to an all-male prison because she’s too dangerous to be locked up at a women’s facility, but authorities might be playing right into her hands.

The maniacal murderess has a history of luring men into her web and then killing and slicing up their bodies with a chainsaw.

In 2012, she was sentenced to life behind bars for the dismemberment murders of her ex-husband and her onetime lover on separate occasions. She shot them both in the head, carved up their bodies, stored their parts in a freezer and buried their remains under the concrete floor of her sweet shop. She then hung air fresheners to hide the smell of their rotting corpses.

After her conviction, Carranza was incarcerated at a women’s prison in Schwarzenau, Lower Austria, but will now be moved to a “special” all-male penitentiary in Asten, Upper Austria, The Mirror reported Monday.

Carranza will be the first female prisoner to be housed at the state-of-the-art facility, which currently holds 91 men. Thirteen additional female inmates will be transferred there in the near future.

The staff consists of 45 nurses, 18 therapists, four doctors and eight prison guards, The Mirror said.

Prisoners can cook meals together in their single and double cells – and freely roam around the grounds. They can also kick back and watch TV in the lounge.

In 2008, Carranza walked up behind her ex-husband, Holger Holz, as he worked at his computer, pressed a .22-caliber Beretta against the back of his head and squeezed the trigger.

She confessed that she was furious when Holz wouldn’t leave their Vienna home after their divorce. She also called him “violent and lazy.”

The two had originally met when she was an Au Pair in Germany before she became the proprietor of an ice cream shop in Vienna.

Two years later, Carranza whacked her ice cream salesman boyfriend, Manfred Hinterberger, in a similar fashion.

She pumped several bullets into the back of his head when she went to confront him about an alleged affair he was having, but he was passed out drunk.

After disposing of his corpse, she got a manicure to repair her damaged nails.

In June 2011, plumbers stumbled upon the remains of both victims as they were doing work in the cellar of Carranza’s ice cream shop.

Carranza went on the lam to Italy, but was captured by authorities several days later.

She was two months pregnant by a third man at the time of her arrest and has since gotten married to him while in prison.

She has written a memoir titled, “My Two Lives: The True Story of the Ice Lady

Britain's Security Minister Ben Wallace has warned that ISIS could be planning a chemical attack on the UK.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Wallace said the terrorist group wants to build on chemical attacks in Syria by bringing the weapons to Europe.

He pointed to a foiled plot in February 2016 in Morocco where weapons were being created by an ISIS cell to cause mass casualties.

"Moroccan authorities dismantled a cell involving chemical weapons," Wallace explained. "They recovered toxic chemical and biological substances and a large stock of fertiliser. The substances found could have been used to produce homemade explosives and could have been transformed into a deadly toxin."

The Security Minister added: "The ambition of IS [Islamic State] or Daesh is definitely mass-casualty attacks. They want to harm as many people as possible and terrorise as many people as possible.

"They have no moral objection to using chemical weapons against populations and, if they could, they would in this country. The casualty figures that could be involved would everybody's worst fear. We have certainly seen reports of them using it in Syria and Iraq [and] we have certainly seen aspirations for it in Europe."

Wallace told The Sunday Times that UK security chiefs have carried out exercises to prepare for a chemical attack, which he described as the country's "worst fear."

Thirty-nine people, including many foreigners, were killed Sunday when a gunman went on a rampage at an exclusive nightclub in Istanbul where revellers were celebrating the New Year.

As police launched a dragnet for the assailant, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the carnage sought to sow chaos and undermine peace, but Turkey would never bow to the threat.

The attack on the waterside Reina nightclub began when 2017 in Turkey was just 75 minutes old, after a year of unprecedented bloodshed that saw hundreds die in strikes blamed on Kurdish militants and jihadists.

The assailant shot dead a policeman and a civilian at the club entrance and then went on a shooting spree inside where up to 700 people were feting the New Year.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said the attacker had escaped and was now the target of a major manhunt, expressing hope the suspect "would be captured soon".

He added that of 20 victims identified so far, 15 were foreigners and five were Turks. Another 65 people were being treated in hospital.

"The attacker -- in the most brutal and merciless way -- targeted innocent people who had only come here to celebrate the New Year and have fun," Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin said at the scene on the shores of the Bosphorus.

Many revellers threw themselves into the water in panic and efforts were under way to rescue them, NTV television said. Dogan news agency said the gunman was dressed in a Santa Claus outfit, although this has yet to be confirmed.

Soylu said the gunman had arrived with a gun concealed underneath an overcoat but subsequently exited the venue wearing a different garment.

The nationalities of the victims have yet to be disclosed although Israel said one of its nationals was wounded and another missing and France said three of its nationals were wounded.

- 'Create chaos' -

Television pictures showed party-goers -- including men in suits and women in cocktail dresses -- emerging from the nightclub in a state of shock.

Dogan reported that some witnesses claimed the assailants were "speaking Arabic" while NTV said special force police officers were still searching the club.

Erdogan said in a statement that with such attacks, "they are working to destroy our country's morale and create chaos."

Turkey would deploy every means to fight "terror organisations" and the countries supporting them, Erdogan said, without giving details on which groups or nations he was referring to.

But Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said it was too early to talk about responsibility. "We are not yet at the point where we can say it is this organisation," he told NTV.

The attack evoked memories of the November 2015 carnage in Paris when Islamic State jihadists went on a gun and bombing rampage on nightspots in the French capital, killing 130 people including 90 at the Bataclan concert hall.

- 'Walking on top of people' -

From Sydney to Paris, Rio to London, security had been boosted over fears that the New Year festivities could present a target for violent extremists.

In Istanbul, at least 17,000 police officers had been deployed and some, as is customary in Turkey, dressed themselves as Santa Claus as cover, according to television reports.

"Just as we were settling down, by the door there was a lot of dust and smoke. Gunshots rang out," witness Sefa Boydas, a professional footballer, told AFP. "When I was walking, people were walking on top of people."

Turkey has been hit by a wave of attacks blamed on Kurdish militants and IS jihadists and 2016 saw more attacks than any other year in the history of the country.

On December 10, 44 people were killed in a double bombing in Istanbul after a football match hosted by top side Besiktas, an attack claimed by the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK), seen as a radical offshoot of the outlawed PKK rebel group.

In June, 47 people were killed in a triple suicide bombing and gun attack at Istanbul's Ataturk airport, with authorities blaming IS.

- 'No crime more cynical' -

Mainly Muslim Turkey's religious affairs agency Diyanet condemned the attack, saying the fact it took place in a nightclub "was no different to it being in a market or place of worship".

Turkey is still reeling from a failed July coup blamed by the government on the US-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen that has been followed by a relentless purge of his alleged supporters from state institutions.

"It's hard to imagine a crime more cynical than the killing of civilians during a New Year's celebration," Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a condolence message to Erdogan.

Two weeks ago, off-duty policeman assassinated Russia's ambassador to Turkey in an Ankara. Putin assured Erdogan that Moscow was a "reliable partner" in the fight against terror.

The United States and France voiced outrage at Sunday's attack and said they stood alongside Turkey, their ally in NATO, in its fight against terror.

The bloodbath came as the Turkish army wages a four-month incursion in Syria to oust IS jihadists and Kurdish militants from the border area, suffering increasing casualties.

Turkey is also spearheading a ceasefire plan with Russia aimed at creating a basis for peace talks to end the near six year civil war.

The new Lamborghini Urus will be a different type of Lamborghini.

Although
it won't be the first SUV to emerge from Sant'Agata, it will be the
brand's first hybrid when it arrives sometime in 2018.

In
an interview with Autocar, Lamborghini R&D chief Maurizio Reggiani
confirmed that the upcoming Urus will be offered with a plug-in hybrid
drivetrain.

According to Reggiani, Lamborghini purists need not fear, for hybridization will not spread beyond the Urus SUV.

Rumors of a production Lamborghini hybrid have been floating around the industry from some time.

At the 2014 Paris Motor Show, the Italian supercar maker teased the public with the hybrid Asterion concept.

In
a 2015 interview with Business Insider, then-Lamborghini CEO Stephan
Winkelmann ruled out the hybridization of the brand's supercars, but
hinted at the possibility of a hybrid Urus.

In the
interview, Winkelmann, who left Lambo to become the new boss at Audi
Sport earlier this year, called the Urus the "supercar of SUVs" that is
designed with passenger comfort and usability in mind.

The
idea of a hybrid Lamborghini isn't as far fetched as one might think.
The Urus will be built on VW Group's MLB-evo platform. The award-winning
modular platform also underpins, among others, the Audi Q7 SUV which is
already available in plug-in hybrid guise.

In addition to the hybrid, the Urus will also offered with a 4.0 liter, twin-turbocharged V8 sourced from parent company Audi.

The
production variant is not expected to stray very far from the Urus
Concept that made its world debut at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show.

Upon
its arrival, the Urus will become the latest entrant into the new
ultra-luxury SUV segment. Others in the segment include the Bentley
Bentayga — a fellow MLB-evo platform vehicle— and Rolls-Royce's upcoming
Project Cullinan.

Exxonmobil has sacked about 150 Nigerian workers in what its management described as a regular evaluation of its operation as part of a disciplined management process.

But the Chairman of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Exxonmobil branch, Mr. Paul Eboigbe, in a telephone interview with Daily Sun, said the sacking of the workers did not follow due process, and cannot stand in the face of the law.

Eboigbe said while discussions and negotiations were still ongoing, and a final agreement yet to be reached, the management unilaterally abandoned talks and went ahead to issue sack letters to the 150 affected workers.

He said the ploy deployed by the management was to exit Nigerian workers and in return bring in expatriates to take up the jobs that Nigerians were capable of executing, lamenting that the salary of an expatriate could pay the salaries of 10 Nigerians.

The union leader said a couple of sectional heads and General Managers were sacked in an undignified manner to pave way for the employment of the expatriates, saying PENGASSAN would not allow that to happen. ‘‘We adjourned the meeting to reconvene at a later date. And while waiting to continue talks, the management started issuing sack letters to the affected workers. This ill treatment cannot stand. And we will do all we can to resist it.”

On what the next line of action would be, Eboigbe said he has directed all his members in offshore location to down tools while similar instruction is being carried out at the Exxonmobil headquarters in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Responding, Exxonmobil Manager, Media and Communications, Mr. Oge Udeagha, explained that ExxonMobil regularly evaluates its operations as part of a disciplined management process and continually strives to operate its business in as safe and efficient a manner as possible.

‘‘We invest for the long term and are focused on maintaining a stable, well-developed workforce and are committed to treating our employees with respect and in accordance with applicable rules and regulations,’’ he said.

According to him, the development is a limited programme that will impact a relatively small fraction of employees, adding that special benefits specifically introduced for this purpose will be paid to affected employees consistent with existing labour agreements.

The company, he said, is also arranging special programmes to support the transition from the company for those affected, saying that Exxonmobil respects the rights of its workforce and will continue to engage with them to resolve the situation.

Two white men allegedly forced a young Muslim woman to the ground in a shopping area in east London and dragged her by her headscarf, or hijab. Police are reportedly investigating the case and are treating it as a racist attack.

The incident took place in Chingford, where the 27-year-old victim was visiting a friend at a hair salon. A spokesman for Scotland Yard said the incident took place after 8.30pm local time on Wednesday (14 December).

The woman reportedly told police that two men approached her from behind and tried to take her hijab off. In the process they pushed her to the ground and dragged her over some distance.

The Evening Standard quoted eye witnesses as saying that the woman was lying on the pavement for almost 20 minutes before she managed to get to a nearby restaurant to dial 999. She was then attended to by paramedics and was later taken to the hospital.

A waiter at the Fes restaurant, where she went to seek help, told the tabloid: "The poor girl was shaking like a leaf, we had to sit her down and give her water before she could speak.

"She told us two white guys shoved her then dragged her along the floor by her headscarf and left her on the pavement. She was having a panic attack when we saw her and could barely breathe. It's sickening that people can do this," the person said.

Another eye witness at the Turkish eatery, Hussan Bukhari, said that the woman was "absolutely terrified and in tears".

"She had back surgery last month and was really worried it was damaged again as she couldn't walk by herself. She said 'They took nothing from me, not my phone, not my bag. They just thought they could get away with it. I thought this area was safe.'

"As a Muslim myself, that could have been my mother or sister who was carried in so I felt really protective of her," the man said.

The Guardian reported that police said the two white males were aged 17 to 19. They reportedly ran off north along Old Church Road following the incident.

The Metropolitan police said in a statement that no arrests have been made so far. "Officers from Waltham Forest CID are investigating," the statement read.
